Frequently Asked Questions About Storage Tank Heaters

What is a Storage Tank Heater?

Storage Tank Heaters, as the name implies, have a large storage tank ready to dispense hot water at a moment's notice and are the most common type of water heater in the United States. The water heater in your home is most likely a Storage Tank Heater. There are two types of Storage Tank Heaters: Gas and Electric. If you need a water heater replacement, it would be helpful for us to know what kind you have before we come out to visit you.

How can I tell if I have a Gas Water Heater?

Gas water heaters have a pilot light that needs to be fed with a steady stream of gas in order to stay lit. A 1/2" or 3/4" gas line comes out of the wall or floor and runs directly into the water heater's thermostat, which is typically located on the side of the tank near the bottom. The pipe itself is usually made of galvanized steel, and it should also have a valve on it which allows you to shut off the flow of gas. Sometimes a gas line will be connected to the water heater via flexible steel tubing. The cold water pipe will most likely be made of PVC and have a shutoff valve on it, and the hot water pipe is made of copper. While both water pipes are located at the TOP of the water heater the gas pipe is not, so it should be easy to locate. Also coming out of the top of the tank between the supply lines will be a metal tube that is MUCH wider than the water supply lines . This is the flue, and it is used to direct the flow of hot exhaust gas and other byproducts of combustion up and out of the building.

How can I tell if I have an Electric Water Heater?

Electric Water Heaters have a flexible steel tube with electrical wiring entering it, usually through the top of the tank by the water pipes. This flexible tubing will NOT have a shutoff valve (the shutoff valve belongs to the cold water supply pipe), nor will it be made of copper (the copper pipe is the hot water pipe). If you're still unsure as to whether or not you have a gas or electric water heater, check to see if there is a thermostat with a gas line running into it (if you're not sure what that looks like, see the previous question on Gas Water Heaters). If you don't see a thermostat or a gas line, you have an Electric Water Heater.

What type of Water Heater is better? Gas or Electric?

Whether or not you opt for a Gas or Electric Water Heater depends on a variety of factors, such as the age of the building, geographic location, and ease of compliance with local code. However, water heater technology has come a long way in the past 20 years, and there are energy-efficient models of both types available in a wide range of sizes.

What are the advantages of Storage Tank Heaters?

The main benefit of Storage Tank Heaters is the cost. These types of water heaters are relatively inexpensive and can provide many years of trouble-free service.
